Homeschool Project: True Leaf Market, Salad Seed Starter Kit

Hey there friends! I hope you all are doing well or as well as can be expected during these uncertain times. I like many other parents across this great country have recently found themselves playing a new role as I have begun homeschooling my 3 kids. While we are still doing the regular bookwork provided to them by their own line classroom we have also started doing some very fun hands-on activities too. We are so thankful to be working with the fine folks at True leaf Market garden seed packets and sharing our salad growing with you guys!

Our family eats a lot of salads and we love being able to grow our own. It's very satisfying to watch the process from start to finish and seeing our plants change and grow from day to day. The kit we picked is currently available for just $18.89, please know prices are subject to change without notice. Shipping is free on all orders over $45 so make sure to check out all of the other products able to order on the True Leaf Market website.

Start your own salad garden seeds indoors and get a jump on the growing season. Also perfect for transplanting to indoor planters for year-round container gardening. Cultivate your own fresh, lettuce and other salad vegetables and enjoy the fun and benefits of indoor gardening. Seed Starter Kits make fantastic gifts. The Salad Starter Kit includes: Beautiful Giftable Box, trays, humidity dome, seed label sticks, compressed soil pucks (just add water), easy to follow instructions and an assortment of salad garden seeds (enough for multiple plantings).
Our True Leaf Market, Deluxe Salad Seed Starter Kit came with easy to follow directions and everything you need minus a measuring cup and water.

The Deluxe kit we received included the following: Beautiful Giftable Box - 2 Drip Trays - Two 12 Cell Seed Tray - 2 Humidity Domes - Seed Label Sticks - 24 Compressed Soil Pucks (just add water) and an assortment of 12 salad garden seeds (enough for multiple plantings) - Easy to follow instructions
12 SEEDS INCLUDED - Carrot - Scarlet Nantes 5-g, Lettuce, Mixed Greens - Gourmet Mixture 2.5-g, Radish - Cherry Belle 2-g, Tomato - Large Red Cherry 300-mg, Cabbage - Red Acre 4-g, Lettuce, Romaine - Parris Island Cos 2.5-g, Beet - Detroit Dark Red 8-g, Cucumber - Marketmore 76 3-g, Pepper, Sweet - Big Red 300-mg, Tomato - Hamson (DX 52 12) 300-mg, Chives 2-g, Lettuce, Butterhead - Buttercrunch 2.5-g

To start you will need to add the 1 1/2 cups of water to the drip trays then add the growing trays on top. Place a compressed soil puck into each of the growing trays. Wade really enjoyed the compressed soil pucks! It was really neat to watch them expand and grow!

Here he is getting the soil ready to sew his seeds. He is also writing the names of the plants on the seed labeling sticks so we know exactly what is growing in each space.

Make a small hole in the soil and add 3 to 4 seeds soil slot, loosely cover the seeds with a little soil. Place the humidity domes over the top to make your mini greenhouse complete!

Our proud "farmer" Wade! He is so excited to see how this all turns out! We even updated his teachers with our project. Water only when needed by lifting up the grow trays and adding water to the drip trays. You will need to place your mini greenhouse in an area that is between 62-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Since we are already in the '80s in Georgia we placed ours in our mudroom where they will get lots of sunlight and warmth.

As you can see within just a few days our crops have started to sprout! Once the plants have established more than 2 leaves you are ready to move outdoors!

We plan on keeping you all updated on our Instagram if you would like to follow along. For more information on True Leaf Market and to stay up to date on specials and promotions make sure to also follow them on  FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

  1. What a fun learning project for the kids. The best part is mom gets some lettuce to eat

  2. That is a great way to incorporate gardening into the curriculum. Gardening is great for science and even math if you think about days to sprouting, harvesting/blooming, etc.
